The Harmattan Dust in Ghana

PDF, ebook, epub (ePub, fb2, mobi)

The Harmattan is an important seasonal atmospheric phenomenon that affects most parts of West Africa near the Gulf of Guinea during the northern winter. This book covers the experimental study of the physical characteristics of the Harmattan dust aerosol in Ghana near the Gulf of Guinea. It features: The Harmattan definition and period of occurrence, effects on the environment, the Saharan dust transport and characteristics over regions traversed; mobilisation and sedimentation of aerosol particle, the Sahara dust events and influence of large scale atmospheric systems including the ITCZ and the North Atlantic Oscillation; The principle of measurements and the experimental methods to determine the Harmattan dust physical characteristics including: the mean particle number and mass concentrations, particle number and mass frequency distributions, particle size (diameter), transit time, dust flux and deposition rate, relationship between the Harmattan dust and the ITCZ as well as the NAO Index

Harmattan Ghana

The dry winds carry dust and sand particles which block the sun resulting in arid weather during the Harmattan season. When dust blows in it can linger for couple days or as long as few weeks. Kwame Aboh Paper presented to Journal of Applied Science and Technology 2008 . Most of the year dry lands. The effect caused by the dust and sand stirred by these winds is known as the Harmattan haze which costs airlines millions of dollars in cancelled and diverted flights each year and risks public health by increasing meningitis cases. The Harmattan is a dry dustladen continental wind and in the boreal winter Harmattan dust plumes affects many West African countries including Ghana. Some of the dust is trapped in the vegetation in lakes and other inland waters and a little on the bare land whereas the rest of the dust is blown further away to .
